Book Overview

Compassionate Thinking is not just another introduction to philosophy; it is a book with a special purpose in mind. It is a personal account of how a contemporary teacher of philosophy came to value philosophy both as a tool for liberation and simultaneously could see philosophy as a tool for oppression and domination. You can use the book as an introduction to the most important ideas and thinkers of Western philosophy. But it is my hope that you will use it long after your school experience as a guide book for life. My twelve years as an organic farmer and my life experience as a father of five boys have taught me to see the hidden connections behind things. There are some things in life we must just do, but many things we can analyze and understand. As we understand their origins we are able to change them if the need arises.

We must trust in intuition, but in order to shape our subconscious mind we must train our intellectual mind. Critical philosophy helps both, intuition and critique.

I have included a short list of recommended films that will help you to follow the material better. They are available in any good library. But I do not believe they are essential to enjoy and benefit from the book.

My intention is to make philosophy available again at the street corners, in coffee houses, and the public forum. I deeply believe that the pursuit of a critical philosophical mind is one of the most vital corner stones of a free and democratic society.
